“that sH*t will never sell!”

by David Gluckman

A wise and witty look at one man’s creative work over a 45-year career in the drinks industry, “That sh*t will never sell!” is a 336-page paperback with a pacy, lively design packed with visuals and printed in full colour throughout.

Its author, David Gluckman, came to us with a fully formed manuscript about his creative endeavours in the drinks industry. He had already come up with an attention-grabbing title and commissioned a bold, witty cover design to match. He wanted an equally striking approach for the pages of his book. Our first step was to explore various ways of creating visual interest to accompany the text.

Over the course of the 45-year career detailed in his book, David had accumulated a large stock of bottles, labels, leaflets and ads, and the design concept we settled on made creative use of as much of his material as possible. To supplement the existing imagery we arranged a photoshoot, undertook picture research and created artwork. We also decided one chapter required a slightly different feel and worked with David to restructure it.

As part of the process, we presented a range of book formats, suggested paper stocks and print finishes, and ordered in samples so that David could make informed choices about the finished product. With these decisions in place, we selected a printer who could offer us the right finish and a price that would work for David’s budget.

Once the book was designed, we worked through scheduled stages of review and amendment, calling in proofs to establish how the pages would look in print. Finished copies were then printed, bound and shipped as per David’s requirements. Books have sold well and the title is now in its second edition.

“Simon and Angela took my raw manuscript and mishmash of visuals and turned them into a cohesive, visually stunning book. They helped shape the content, cleaned up the photos, created artwork, sourced printers and provided guidance on essential aspects of the business. Their care and attention to detail have resulted in a book that far exceeds my wildest expectations. I could not be happier with the results.”
